Books for Lunch Book Discussion -- James Kennedy Public Library

This group gathers on the first Monday of each month to discuss different books selected by the group. This month’s selection is not yet decided. Bring your lunch, if you wish. Dessert and beverages are provided by the participants or the Friends of the Library. New members are welcome to join at any time! Copies of the book are available to borrow from the library.

Shared Youth Services Librarian

The Cedar Falls and Waterloo Public Libraries are seeking a full-time Shared Youth Services Librarian. Position is salaried, and supervises the Youth Departments at both the Cedar Falls and Waterloo Public Libraries. Some evening and weekend work required. Salary range $47,301-70,252.

Qualifications include: understanding of child/adolescent development, strong knowledge of children’s literature and print/electronic reference sources appropriate for children, familiarity with children’s electronic media and general technology, strong written and oral communication skills, ability to plan and develop children’s programming relevant to two diverse communities; the ability to lead two departments with humor, integrity, fairness, and support a team-oriented constantly changing environment; possess a philosophy of youth services, and a management philosophy/model; possess grant writing skills, the courage to try new approaches, energy and creativity. Have knowledge of assessment and determining effective outreach venues. Spanish language preferred, but not required. ALA accredited Masters or comparable post-graduate degree required. Four years of increasingly responsible experience in a library setting, including two years of lead or supervisory experience. Position also requires the physical condition necessary for standing, sitting, or walking for prolonged periods of time; adequate speech, hearing, and eyesight required; may be required to lift moderately heavy objects. Post-offer, pre-employment physical and drug screen required.

Statewide Foundation Recognizes Library Project

The Iowa Architectural Foundation has named the Conrad Public Library as its recipient of the 2009 Community Design Excellence Award. The award was presented September 24 during the annual Iowa League of Cities convention/banquet in Davenport.

Building a new library in Conrad’s downtown area was recognized due to local support of quality architecture and the impact the new library has on the community’s quality of life. The library project has exceeded expectations because new jobs were created, the structure is now home to several community-based events, and patron visitation has increased significantly.

“This was an ambitious project for the citizens of Conrad and the outcome is impressive,” said Gary Bechtel, 2009 chair of the Iowa Architectural Foundation Board of Trustees. “The fact they raised half of the funding through grants and private contributions really speaks to their level of commitment.”

The library was nominated by Darla Ubben, program director of the Conrad Chamber-Main Street and the award was accepted on behalf of the library by Denise Hoy, Conrad’s city administrator/clerk.

The Community Design Excellence Awards recognize governments, not-for-profit organizations, and/or local citizen groups for significant achievements in the promotion of new quality architecture, preservation of existing quality architecture, or community design. The awards place emphasis on the impact the project has on the community. Since the program began in 2000, 22 projects statewide have been recognized.
